Matt Tuohy
Captain Matthew W. (Matt) Tuohy was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and was a member of the inaugural NROTC class at Jacksonville University. Today he serves his Alma Mater as the director of the School of Aviation and Military Sciences.
Throughout his almost 27-year career as a Naval flight officer, he flew the S3A and S3B Viking. His early assignments included Naval Aviation Standardization and Operating Procedures (NATOPS) officer at both the squadron and wing levels, squadron aircraft maintenance officer, and catapult and arresting gear officer on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69). He was the commanding officer of Sea Control Squadron 32 (VS-32), the helicopter carrier, USS INCHON (MCS-12), and finally the aircraft carrier, USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63), as part of the Forward Deployed Naval Forces; home ported in Yokosuka, Japan. Ashore, he served on the Joint Staff in Washington, D.C., as the assistant deputy director for Operations (Information Operations).
Since retiring from active duty, his career has been varied. He served as the JU director of Aeronautics, a staff business system analyst for Dynamics Research Corp., Executive VP of Wind Energy Consulting and Contracting, executive vice president of East Coast Ice, and the managed solutions director at Incepture, a subsidiary of Florida Blue. While at Incepture, he founded the Incepture Veterans Employment Taskforce (InVET) which was nationally recognized by the American Staffing Association’s “CARE” Award in 2013. In October 2014, he returned to Jacksonville University for a second time as the director of the School of Aviation. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI)
Active in the community, he is the past president of the Jacksonville University Alumni Board of Governors and a former member of the University’s Board of Trustees. He is the past president of the Jacksonville Council of the Navy League. He is the past chair of the Greater Jacksonville Area USO Board of Directors and the current chair of the City of Jacksonville’s Renew Arlington Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) Advisory Board. He also serves on various other advisory boards and committees. He remains active in the leadership of the Jacksonville Military Veterans Coalition (JMVC) which is the private partner in the City of Jacksonville’s public/private partnership, “Jobs for Vets.”
Tuohy was the JU Distinguished Alumni Award recipient in 2000. Additionally, he was named to the inaugural class of 75 “Distinguished Dolphins” during JU’s 75th anniversary and was awarded the JU Distinguished Service Alumni Award. In May of 2014, he was named one of the inaugural honorees for the “Veterans of Influence” award by the Jacksonville Business Journal. In 2017 ,he was named the inaugural recipient of the JU Outstanding Military Alumnus of Distinction Award. In November 2017, the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce honored him with the RDML Kevin F. Delaney Military Hall of Fame Award, given annually to recognize the most influential veteran and their impact on the community.
In addition to his bachelor’s degree from JU, he is a graduate of the College of Naval Command and Staff and the Armed Forces Staff College. He holds Master of Arts degrees from Salve Regina, The Newport College and The Naval War College. In 2003, he completed a Master of Business Administration degree at JU.
He is married to the former Susan Fuller of Jacksonville, they have two daughters, Katie Griggs and Mary Anne Jolly and sons-in-law, Matt Griggs and Patrick Jolly, and grandson Thomas and Granddaughter Bridget Griggs.
